Do you wish to work on your English skills but don’t have time for a full-length course? This new flexible module allows you to individualize your progress. Select 4 half-day workshops from a list of interesting and academically relevant workshops that match your specific needs.

Target participants

Bachelor's and Master's students, PhD/doctoral students, staff, MAS students, alumni, PH Zurich and ZHdK members

Entry requirements/Level of course

Participants should have already reached a level of B2, as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Please assess your level using the diagnostic tools on our website.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes for this module vary, depending on the workshops that the participant chooses.

Content and approach

Participants choose 4 workshops from the list of workshops below. Each workshop consists of four 45-minute lessons.

Each workshop is assessed with a grade. Participants must complete 4 workshops within 2 semesters in order to qualify for 1 ECTS point.

In order to complete the requirements of the module, participants have successfully completed the assessment of 4 workshops. Those being offered this semester include:
  • Writing about graphs, diagrams and images (04 March, 08:15-11:30)
    Do you need to write an analysis of a graph or image in your academic thesis or research paper? Here’s how to do it in a natural, clear and helpful way.
  • CVs and cover letters for the international job market (09 March, 08:15-11:30)
    Learn about the purpose, layout, and structure of a good CV or résumé for your internship or job application.
  • Pronunciation: Stress, rhythm and intonation (13 March, 09:15-12:30)
    This course will help you understand exactly what is happening when you speak English, and how to get closer to natural, efficient pronunciation.
  • Identifying disinformation and fallacies (31 March, 08:15-11:30)
    If you want to be more media literate and better able to assess the merits of an argument, then this workshop will provide you with the tools to ask more probing questions.
  • Common errors in advanced writing (17 April, 12:15-15:30)
    This workshop will help you improve your English grammar skills for academic writing, helping you to write more clearly and feel more confident about your accuracy.
  • Preparation and practice for oral course exams (29 April, 12:15-15:30)
    Are you familiar with oral exams? If they haven’t been a part of your education until now, then this workshop will provide you with some insights and tips for performing well.
  • Conversational networking skills (06 May, 08:30-11:45)
    This course will help you to improve your conversation and networking skills in professional settings, so you can speak more confidently and spontaneously.
  • AI tools for academic writing (08 May, 09:00-12:15)
    Learn how to input creative prompts into online tools such as ChatGPT and interpret the output.
  • Intercultural communication: an introduction (02 June, 12:15-15:30)
    Going abroad or new to Switzerland? This workshop offers an introduction to the concepts and practice of communicating in different national and cultural contexts.

Assessment, ECTS points, and workload

1 ECTS point is awarded for successful completion of the assessment in 4 workshops over a maximum of 2 semesters. Participants can complete all 4 of their chosen workshops in 1 semester if they wish.

Each workshop includes a short assessment and a grade. The assessment is consistent with the learning goals of the workshop and thus varies. The final grade is an average of the grades received for 4 workshops.

Materials

Course materials are provided online (Moodle).

Additional information

Once you have signed up for “Course builder” and received a confirmation email from us, you will be sent additional information about the individual workshops, including information about signing up, the content, preparation tasks you need to do before the workshop, and the final assessment. You will be able to register for your chosen workshops until exactly one week before the workshop starts. You may also change your registration up to one week before the workshop takes place, after which time your attendance is expected.

You may not sign up for or attend more than 4 workshops and students cannot gain credits for the same workshop twice, as outlined in our Terms and Conditions.

Your lecturers will log your result for each workshop, and your final grade will be an average of the 4 grades you receive. When you have successfully completed the assessment for 4 workshops, you will be issued a certificate. The Language Center can offer 2 types of certificates: for a Certificate of achievement (Leistungsnachweis) and 1 ECTS, you must complete all 4 workshop assessments; for a Certificate of attendance (Teilnahmebestätigung) and no ECTS, you must attend 4 workshops.
