Language Center of UZH and ETH Zurich

ETH Science in Perspective (SiP) courses

ETH Zurich requires that to complete a degree, eight credit points must be earned from its Science in Perspective (SiP) program (of D-GESS) – six at bachelor’s level and two at master’s level. Language courses may be counted for a maximum of three credit points.

The following English courses at the Language Center qualify for 2 SiP/GESS points each if successfully completed:

  • Advanced English for academic purposes C1-C2
  • English language and literature C1-C2 (autumn semester only)
  • New Zealand through literature and film C1-C2 (spring semester only)

These courses are also open to UZH students. You can enroll for these courses through our website. Registration via ETH MyStudies (or the UZH module booking system) is not possible.

NB: The English unit at the Language Center issues 1 or 2 ECTS points for most courses (on successful completion), but you can only get SiP/GESS points from the English courses listed above. (You can, however, get SiP/GESS points from courses in other languages through the Language Center – see the course descriptions for more information.)

In addition to the SiP/GESS credits required by ETH, you may also be able to add ECTS points from English courses not listed above to your degree requirements, depending on your degree course. For more information about what you can/can’t count towards your degree, please ask the degree adviser of your department or study program.
