Target participants

Bachelor's and Master's students, PhD/doctoral students, MAS students, PH Zurich and ZHdK members

Entry requirements/Level of course

The course caters to students who are at a minimum of B2 level as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Please assess your level using the diagnostic tools on our website.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, participants are able to:
  • Communicate more clearly about aspects of their own discipline
  • Understand how texts and verbal communication in their discipline are organised and how they may differ from other fields
  • Better organise their ideas in English and clearly articulate their views
  • Utilise a more appropriate range of language when dealing with academic topics in general

Content and approach

This intensive week is designed to prepare students for active participation in their upcoming academic coursework in English, introducing them to the different demands of academic discourse. It provides input on and practice with academic vocabulary, reading approaches, writing principles, interdisciplinary discussions and listening in academic contexts. Upon completion of the course, participants will have a range of strategies to continue improving throughout their semester courses.
Students will participate in pairs or in groups on integrated tasks which allow them to explore the nature of general academic English and the norms of their own discipline. Input will be provided on the features of academic English, which the class will then experiment with to improve their own communication abilities in the field.

Assessment, ECTS points, and workload

1 ECTS point is awarded for successful completion of the course. Successful completion requires active and continuous participation and a minimum combined mark of 60%, which is 4.0 on the Swiss marking system.

Assessment has two components:
  • An in-class writing test.
  • A 10-minute presentation based on a topic of your choice.
