Academic writing English
1. Semester courses in academic writing for all ETH/UZH members
The following courses are for students who wish to improve their general writing skills in English.
- Academic writing for UZH B2
- Writing and speaking B2-C1
- Advanced academic writing C1-C2
For assistance with writing projects in progress (Master’s thesis, doctoral/PhD dissertation, articles for publication)
- Writing your master's thesis
- Doctoral writing for research and publication
To receive feedback on your texts in progress and work on revisions.
- Advanced writing workshop C1-C2 (7 fortnightly sessions)
2. Workshops
For students: Course builder: Choose your own workshops
Students can register for Course builder: Choose your own workshops and then choose 4 half-day workshops that meet their personal needs and goals in English. Workshops are focused on various language-related topics, including topics to help students improve their writing, like grammar review, writing job applications, and using AI tools to improve texts. A selection of these workshops is offered on various dates and times throughout the semester, and 1 ECTS can be earned by completing any 4 workshops within 2 semesters.
For PhD/doctoral students, researchers, and other UZH/ETH staff
Half-day workshops are offered on different topics each semester, including workshops to help participants improve their writing, review grammar, and structure successful proposals and abstracts.
3. Tailor-made academic writing courses
Our tailor-made scientific and academic writing courses are designed to meet the specific needs of different target groups at the ETH and UZH. Courses are created in collaboration with departments, professors, or research groups, and can include:
- Scientific writing courses for doctoral/PhD candidates or Master’s students that are built into a core curriculum
- Scientific writing courses that are recommended (but not mandatory) for specific research groups
- Workshops on various aspects of academic writing
- Online courses on academic writing for specific research teams, working groups, or events

4. One-to-one: Writing Center, coaching
The Writing Center offers writers free 45-minute online consultations, in which they can get feedback from one of our lecturers. Each participant may attend 2 consultations per semester. Sign up for an appointment here: Moodle
